About Us
Found in 1944
The Center is located 20 miles south of Boston in the beautiful seaside town of Cohasset. We offer programs from toddlers to adults. There is something here for everyone!
The SSCC is grateful for the generous donation given to our organization by the South Shore Playhouse Associates. This contribution allows the SSCC to continue to provide programs that serve the widest audience from Cohasset to the greater South Shore of Boston.
The South Shore Community Center was established by a group of 25 Cohasset residents on February 7, 1944, with the purpose of providing a recreational outlet for town residents and a Social Center for returning servicemen from WWII. In 1949 the Center, located in the former Furber Estate at the corner of Sohier and North Main Streets, offered a myriad of activities including adult study groups, junior and senior basketball teams and teen dances. In 1949 the Center moved to its present location in the Elisha Doane House located at 3 North Main Street. Built in 1750 it is a true reflection of the New England charm that defines Cohasset Village. Renovations to the building at this time included the creation of a bowling alley and a small meeting room.
In 1953 the Center started its Nursery School Program. Today the program has approximately 90 Nursery, Toddler, Pre-K and Enrichment students annually. Over the years the Center has been renovated to include a state-of-the-art gymnasium and fully accredited Nursery School complete with observation mirrors for parents and an enclosed playground.
During the day, the Center is a busy place. In addition to the children attending preschool there are Gymnastic and Karate classes for older children, Irish Step Dance and the “Little Dipper” program for toddlers ongoing throughout the day. A bowling alley downstairs adds to the fun! Adult Evening programs include cooking, CPR and Health and Wellness Seminars.
Our non-profit organization serves the residents of Cohasset and is also open to anyone who wishes to join! Programs are offered at a discounted rate for members, but non-members may participate as well. The South Shore Community Center is dedicated to serving Cohasset and surrounding communities by providing a welcoming environment for social, educational and recreational pursuits for all.
